RHODES - the Sunshine Isle

WARWICK GREEK ISLAND GUIDES

     Sites of Interest

The list of places to see and visit on Rhodes is extensive - so be warned that, like Crete, seeing everything may not be possible in just one visit - whether just a few days or a few weeks.

There is an embarrassment of riches, both archaeologically and historically speaking, that will entreat you to take a look. The first draw will undoubtedly be the citadel of Rhodes - that stupendous and wildly romantic mediaeval conglomerate of towering gateways and labyrinthine streets bristling with great architectural worth.

Notable Sites:

  • Asklipio Inland from Kiotari. In the little church there are fascinating displays, honouring the continuity of the cult of healing from ancient times to a modern midwife and nurse. In Greek mythology, Asklepios was the son of the god Apollo who created the art of medicine.
  • Cape Prasonisi on the southern tip of Rhodes. Here is a peninsular that's connected to the main island by a sand bar. Don't even think of driving on the sand bar! If you do you may never get back.
  • Acropolis and castle at achingly beautiful Lindos
  • Castle of Kastellos.
  • Castle of Monolithos.
  • Epta Piges. (Seven springs):  if you like springs you will love this place. In the roasting summer months, the generous shade of the trees provides a pleasant respite from the sun and includes a walk - if you have the energy and are wearing lots of insect repellent.Thebiting flies in Greece can be a health hazard.
  • Filerimos Hill. Medieval remains, a monastery and chapel. Sublime views over the north of the island.
  • Kamiros. Ancient ruins in a wildly romantic setting.
  • Tsambika Peak.
  • Rhodes Old Town includes the three main features:
  • Palace of the Prince Grand Master.
  • Street of Knights.
  • Fortifications.
  • Valley of the Butterflies (read moths). The ironic thing here is that the beautiful moths need privacy and peace to procreate and so the visitors are actively causing the moths to gradually lose their numbers.  Far better and more logical to just stay away and look at a guide book instead.

Acropolis of Lindos
Lindos is for most visitors the most impressive archaeological site on Rhodes. Here the dramatic natural landscape is enhanced by the picturesque quality of the more modern town. You will find the most important archaeological monuments at the acropolis, but interesting ruins are scattered at various points within the town and just outside it as well.

Acropolis of Rhodes
The ancient acropolis of Rhodes stood on the hill now known as Monte Smith. Only few surviving remains exist to provide a faint idea of its original grandeur. Still, it is well worth a visit.

Aktaion
A two-storeyd building with flat roof and an arcade looking towards the road by the sea. The walls are built in the typical, local isodomic masonry. Very interesting is the structure of the interior, visible in the plans of the building.

Governor's Palace
The former Governor's Palace, now used as the the Building of the Prefecture, It is one of the most considerable buildings construced on Rhodes during the Italian occupation of the island. National Theatre

Rhodes Old Town
When you approach the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, you are about to enter the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. It's a thrill to behold. Best to know one thing from the start about Old (Medieval) Town of Rhodes (Rhodos): It's not laid out on a grid -- not even close.

St. Catherine Hospice
The Hospice of St. Catherine was built in 1391-92, under grand master Heredia, by the Italian Domenico d'Allemagna, admiral of the Order of the Knights of St. John (Knights Hospitaller). The founder was an important personage, disposing of considerable means.
